Activities for First Tutoring Day!

What should we do for the first meeting of tutors and students? Should we all be together? Should students and tutors do something on their own, or should should it be a group activity? Post your thoughts...

On our first day I think that we should all be seperate with our students. I think this would be best so that the older students don't feel intimidated by the younger kids and vice-versa. Maybe an activity just for fun might help all of us to "bond" with our students individually. It shouldn't be a really in-depth day, it should make the readers want to come back again and read with us, so something easy and fun would be best!....because reading is FUN!!! WHEEEE!!! :)

Hey! I think that for the first day students of the grade.9 level would probably just like to get to know their tutor. Students at the grade.5 level would probably enjoy a group activity, maybe somthing like word bingo or somthing like that.

On our first day with our tutees, I think it would be a great idea to do a group activity. But I would actually rather do a "one on one" get to know your student type thing.
For this i would get my student to do the web diagram about themselves, like we did in the first class of reading tutor.:)

I think on our first day with our students, that the different age groups should be separated. The high school should be in a different room than the elementary so that the high school students confidence doesnt go down any. I think that in separate rooms that there could be a main fun activty planned and then some one-on-one time with the stduents so that the bonding and trust can start. We should spend the class to get to know our students better so that they can trust us better and be more comfortable around us.

On our first day with our students, I think this is the best time to get to know our students and find out what they like to read, what they dont. What their interests are. It also would be a good time to do a few reading fun activities with them. For grade 5 'ers would be much easier to get to know them and have a few fun activities, but the grade 9's wont be so willing to do those reading activities. But thats ok, its only the first day so I wont expect them to finish a novel.

On the first day with our tutees... I believe that we should have a one-on-one confrontation with our student to better understand them as people. I think being able to trust one another in this tutor-tutee relationship is very important. The day should consist of activities and conversations to form a bond between the tutor and the tutee.

Posted by Kat: The way I look at it is, everyone should be seperated and use the first day to give their students an idea of what they will be doing when they come to reading tutor, as well as introducing ourselves and meeting our students. I think we should do one on one, fun activities, but avoid having too much fun because, expecially the grade five students may get the wrong picture of reading tutor and think that it will be a class to do fun things and not improve their ability to read.

I think for the very first day it is better to work alone then in a group. I think the first day is a day to get to know and get used to working together. You will be working alone for the duration of the course, not in a group. I guess it is different for me because i have changed my rewading tutor to 3rd period from Tuesday to Thursday. But it works out for the best because i feel it is better to work alone, then in a group. The students may get to distracted, and it may make them think that this course is just going to be a joke.
For the first day, i think that you should play a couple easy games with them. Nothing that is going to be to hard because you dont want to scare them the first day. Its a day to get to know eachother and feel confident reading with eachother.
