Regarding Phonics...
Regarding Friday's lesson...I hope the lesson on phonics wasn't too discouraging for everyone. Obviously we have to teach, and learn, letter sounds and letter combination sounds. I wanted you to get a sense of why some students may have trouble learning to read. We can't just rely on phonics. Be careful not to repeatedly ask your students to "sound it out". They may need to rely on other strategies. We will be going over more strategies next week. Have a great week end!

The phonics lesson...
hmm... I'd say its definitely complex! I surely don't remeber learning that in elementary. I think teaching a student just phonics would be really fustrating not only for the student but also the one teaching it! I am glad that we dont have to use strictly phonics because it is unreal with having to teach them all that stuff! And if they have a realy hard time with it..!
Over all, the phonics lesson, was quite interesting. Definitely makes you think of all the different sounds and how words are broken down.

I completely agree with you Tina. I don't recall learning to read that way when I was younger. I believe that teaching a child to read through phonics alone, would cause frustration and anger to arise in the classrooms. I believe it would confuse a child who is already having difficulties reading.
I agree with you guys completely. I dont remember doing that at all when i was little. I think that it is very confusing. It would be hard to be that age and try to remember all of those rules.
To be honest i actually liked the lesson. I just never realized that there were so many sounds that different letters made. This lesson really made me think.

I dont remember reading to be that complex either! Phonics would be really hard to learn and this lesson just showed how difficult our english language is. There are so many different sounds and rules that we just don't think about. I think it would be really confusing to teach and to learn phonics.
