High School Reading Not Challenging Enough?
Although this course is designed to help readers who are below grade level, I thought this article would be interesting to discuss. I want to know how you feel about the results of the study that shows reading materials and teacher expectations at high school are lower than they should be.
"It's clear that our high schools should be incorporating more complex reading materials into courses across the curriculum,"
"The impact of low expectations is devastating to students,"
"We have a moral imperative to give all students the opportunity to develop critical reading skills in high school."
These are the statements that stood out the most to me. Please share your thoughts. What has been your experience? Are you worried you haven't been challenged enough in the last two years of your education? I realize this article is meant for teachers but, I think you can handle it!

I completely agreet that reading is not set at a high enough level for high school, especially given the work expected of us in university. Right now, I think that high school is not preparing students to what they may face in the future. I am slightly worried that the work I have done in high school hasn't been challenging enough, but I am confident that I can cope!
wow! This "high school reading not challenging enough" article has a point. I know about 10 people who have graduated from our school and they still don't know how to read.I find it very interesting that only 55% of students are prepared for college, and that this percentage has decreased since 1999.

This raises some strong points. Like for expample if Becca cant even spell agree in here post. :P
Our school obviously needs to help our remedial readers, especially in high school. take steven's post for example, he is a grade 11 student with issues spelling "her" and "example". Maybe some of us should be more careful of making fun of those with learing dissabilities...steven..cough cough...
This is supposed to be the reading tutor class...I feel so sorry for you poor people who are using our blog to fight...lol...I feel extremely sorry for becca, but mainly steven, with his learning disability:P....hehe

After reading the article, I agree that high school students should be at a higher level and it should be more a challange for students. I feel that high school students are not fully prepared to go to college or university. Just by looking at the students at our school, we can all easily tell that not a lot of our students can read at a high level. I know that just for myself, that I haven't been challenged in reading in a couple years.
I agree with Becca. Reading is not set high enough for high school. I found that the reading level has slowly decreased over the years. I find that this is not good because when we go to University, some of us wont have the knowledge of reading of where we should be.
This article really made me think that maybe what we are reading in high school as students is not challenging enough. There are people in high school right now and people who have graduated form high school who are still
experiencing trouble when reading. If the reading that we do in high school was a little bit harder then what it is, the people who are having difficulty reading would stand out and then maybe they could get help faster

I agree completely with the fact that high school reading is not set at a high enough standard. I believe that I have read more books and novels in middle level than I have in all 4 years of high school. I agree with what Becca had to say about Universitys having larger work loads, and that makes me nervous to think that just maybe I haven't reached the level I should be reading at yet either. I do know that I am determined and confident that I would be successful in University regardless, but what about the students hwo can't find that modivation... what then?

I agree completely with the article. I find many people who go through high school are not really good readers. I find even for people who are good readers in high school, get to university or college and realize that they are not ready. They feel like they are really far behind. When you get to university, it is completely different. You are given reading assignments, and if you cant read them, to bad. You dont have a teacher that is going to read it to you.
Going on to university next year, i am seriously wondering how i am going to make out. I am wondering if the work that i ahve done in high school is going to be challenging enough. I just hope i am ready!...
